E-Road network
The International E-Road Network is a numbering system for European roads developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
In 1996, Latvia joined the Agreement on International Motorways of European Countries (AGR), which coordinates the development of the motorway network to meet the future requirements of international traffic. In Latvia, 1225 km or 74.3% of the country’s main roads are part of the international E-road network, thus acquiring international importance.
According to the AGR Agreement, the E-road network mainly includes roads with a strong north-south and west-east orientation. The countries participating in the treaty are not required to ensure that the roads included in the network immediately meet the high technical requirements or are rapidly developed to meet them. The treaty allows for the gradual upgrading of the roads, improving their technical characteristics in line with increasing traffic demands.
