Control of tolls (vignettes)
A road user charge, or vignette, is a charge for the use of main and regional roads in Latvia to encourage their maintenance and development, and to encourage the use of more environmentally friendly vehicles. The toll is paid for the use of sections of the main and regional national roads (except for their crossing at junctions and use in populated areas) by goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3000 kilograms and goods vehicles and combinations thereof with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3500 kilograms.
On 18 February 2023, the control and recording of administrative offences by means of road weather cameras without stopping the vehicle was launched. The control and recording of infringements will take place at the following locations on the main national roads:
Riga Ring Road (Baltezers-Saulkalne) (A4), km 7.8
Motorway Tīnūži-Koknese (P80), km 13.4
Riga-Jelgava-Lithuanian border (Meitene) motorway (A8), km 23.0
The road sections subject to toll are defined in Annex 1 to the Law on Road User Tolls “Sections of main and regional national roads subject to toll”.
According to Article 11 of the Road User Toll Law, the use of a section of a national motorway as defined by the Law without payment of the road user toll is subject to a fine for the owner, keeper or operator of the vehicle of between one hundred and two hundred penalty units, respectively the amount of the fine for this offence may reach EUR 1 000.
